Allowances Nursing trainee allowance restored

The allowances, which were scrapped by the NDC was met with strong resistance from the nursing trainees

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has announced that the nurses trainee allowance has been reinstated.

The allowances, which will officially start at a ceremony at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region on October 10, 2017, will see over 58,000 trainee nurses and midwives in the various public nursing and midwifery schools receive a little over GH¢400 every month.

The allowance, which were scrapped by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) was met with strong resistance from the nursing trainees who complained bitterly about the difficulties it had brought upon them.

The NDC government insisted the continuous payment of the allowances would threaten the future of Ghana’s economy.

Under the allowance scheme, the nurses got at least GH¢450 every quarter. Government had explained the removal of the allowance was to allow it to admit more students.

The allowances had tied the hands of government because huge numbers had serious financial implications.

Prior to the 2016 elections, the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) assured students of the various teacher and nursing training institutions of the party’s commitment to bring back the allowances, to ensure they had a smooth training to serve the country.

The Vice President Dr. Bawumia had said in January 2017 that the allowances would be restored in March 2017.

But the Minister at the 7th induction and oath swearing ceremony for allied health professional in Accra on Saturday, said the registration of beneficiary nurses has already started and expected to be completed today for the smooth roll out of the policy.

"So the nurses will get their allowances before or on the day of the ceremony in Sunyani," he said.
