The life and legacies of the late Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko

Prior to his election as a lawmaker, Kyeremanteng Agyarko served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) from 2001-2009.

Reports from his family indicates that he died from a protracted illness of which he had a corrective surgery on.

This devastating news has elicited condolences across the political divide as well from some prominent Ghanaians.

The National Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay said: "I have learnt with sadness, the death of Hon. Emmanuel Agyarko, MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his colleagues in Parliament and the NPP, whose ideals and principles he espoused with passion and eloquence. May his soul Rest In Peace."

Anthony Nukpenu, the Greater Accra Organizer of the NDC said of the MP: "Mr. Emmanuel Kyeremanten Agyarko has contributed his quota to the country as a lawmaker, and only God knows why he has been called now. May his soul rest in peace".

Though Emmanuel is the lesser known of the Agyarko brothers in Ghanaian politics, his role and contributions in the political terrain cannot overemphasized.

He was elected as the MP for the people of Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2012. He succeeded the current Chief of Staff, Frema Opare Addo.

He retained the seat for the New Patriotic Party in the 2016 general elections by overwhelmingly defeating his opponent Delali Kwesi Brempong of the NDC. He polled 57 per cent of the total votes.

Appointed by former President John Agyekum Kufour, Emmanuel Agyarko is credited with some of the major reforms that has happened at the food regulatory body in the last decade.

In Parliament, he’s served on the committees of Environment, Science and Technology Committee, chaired theGovernment Assurance Committee, and also served on the Health Committee.

He was born on December 10, 1957 at Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region.

He had a Bachelor in Pharmacy which he obtained at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the year 1982.

Kyeremanteng was the junior brother of the former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko.

He is succeeded by a wife and seven children.
