NPP to picket at EC over new voters' register

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) youth wing has hinted it will participate  in a planned move by some  pressure groups to picket at the offices of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday in order to press home the need for a new voters’ register ahead of the 2016 elections. The National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Sammy Awuku insists the decision to join forces with the pressure groups, Let My Vote Count, Alliance For Accountable Governance and Movement for Change, is important since “a new voters’ register for 2016 borders on the very survival of Ghana’s democracy.”Explaining further the call for a new voters’ register, Awuku said in a facebook post, the move must not be deduced to the “usual NPP and NDC banter”, adding that the planned picketing at the EC is not an antagonistic crusade.

Mr. Awuku called on the youth to lend their support to the demonstration by the  “LET MY VOTE COUNT ALLIANCE on Wednesday at the EC.”“It is about the collective destiny of our country and the survival of our democracy. Surely elections are a process and the process which includes a voters register, must be credible”, the facebook post added. He has therefore asked like-minded Ghanaians to join “as we picket on Wednesday the 16th of September at the EC premises to demonstrate our anger and peacefully make our concerns known to the Commission.”Meanwhile, the Police has warned the demonstrators to stay off the premises of the EC and Parliament.
