It is, therefore, common for a footballer to make international headlines and, in 2023, there were quite a number of Ghanaian footballers were content for the international media.

Here are five Ghanaian footballers who made international headlines in 2023:

Christian Atsu’s sad demise

Christian Atsu’s name rose to the top of the trends when it emerged that he was among those stuck in the rubble following the earthquake in Turkey.

For more than a week, the footballer was the biggest news in both local and international media until he was confirmed dead after his lifeless body was pulled out of the wreckage.

The ex-Chelsea and Newcastle United winger, who is survived by a wife and three children, was laid to rest on Friday, March 17, 2022, in his hometown in Ada.

Mohammed Kudus’s transfer saga

In one of the longest transfer sagas of the summer, Mohammed Kudus was linked to almost every big club in Europe.

Ghana international, who put in a transfer request to leave Ajax in January, continued to court attention at the end of the 2022/23 season. At some point, reports suggested he had agreed a deal with Brighton and Chelsea but in the end West Ham United won the race for his signature.

He joined the Hammers from Ajax in a deal worth around €45 million and has signed a five-year deal with David Moyes’ side. The transfer fee made Kudus West Ham’s record signing.

Asamoah Gyan over divorce case

Asamoah Gyan and his ex-wife Gifty also made the headlines following their protracted divorce that ended up being finalised in court.

The couple were once in love and got married in 2013 but their relationship became damaged beyond repair, leading to a very bitter separation.

Their marriage made the headlines when Gyan filed for an annulment at the Matrimonial Division of the High Court in Accra in 2018.

After five years of protracted dispute, the court finally gave its ruling in October, granting the annulment of the marriage but awarding some properties to Gifty.

The court ordered the ex-Sunderland striker to pay his ex-wife a sum of GHc25,000 every month for the welfare and upkeep of their children. The school fees, medical bills, dental care fees, flight tickets for travel and other costs that may come with raising children, are not included in the above sum.

Gyan’s house in the UK and another four-bedroom apartment in Ghana have also been awarded to his ex-wife by the court as compensation. A gas station owned by the retired football at Prampram and a BMW car were also among the properties awarded to Gifty as part of the court settlement.

Raphael Dwamena’s tragic death

Another sad moment that grabbed international headlines was the tragic passing of Ghanaian footballer Raphael Dwamena.

The striker sadly passed away at the age of 28 while featuring in a game between FK Egnatia and Partizani on November 11, 2023.

Play was stopped and the match was eventually suspended when Dwamena, who had a chronic heart condition, abruptly fell to the ground and fell unconscious.

His teammates quickly called for the medics to attend to him, but they were unable to successfully resuscitate the former Red Bull Salzburg forward.

Partey and girlfriend expecting a baby

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey also confirmed his relationship with model Janine Mackson along with a baby they are expecting.

In October, Janine confirmed being pregnant by posting a photo of her baby bump. The model and influencer captioned the photos “New beginnings”, with Partey commenting beneath “God did.”

Partey and his beautiful girlfriend are now set to welcome a baby girl after holding a gender reveal in the presence of their friends and loved ones.

In videos that were shared on social media, Partey was seen being handed a small ball, which he kicked into the air. When the ball burst, pink powder emerged from it, which widely signifies the female gender during such events.
