Today in History: Terrorists opened fire at Togo national team killing 3

On 8th January 2010, which is exactly 10 years today, terrorists opened fire at the Togo national football team travelling through the Province of Cabinda in Angola ahead of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, killing three people and injuring nine in the process.

The three people who perished in the Cabinda incident were Améleté Abalo – Assistant coach of the Togo national football team and manager of ASKO Kara, Stanislas Ocloo, TV sports commentator/journalist for Togolese Television and Mário Adjoua Angolan-born bus driver.

Angolan separatist guerrilla group FLEC, which has waged a war in the region for more than 30 years, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Striker Thomas Dossevi told radio station RMC that "several players are in a bad state."

He says the team was "shot at like dogs" by hooded gunmen, who were "armed to the teeth."

He added: "We had just crossed the border from Congo into Cabinda. We had filled in the border formalities and were surrounded by police. Then there was a powerful burst of gunfire.

"Everyone dived under the seats and the police fired back.

"We stayed under the seats for 20 minutes. It was horrible."
