The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has controversially said that football in the country slumped following the exposé that got former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi banned.

According to him, Nyantakyi was a dynamic person and well-respected outside the shores of Ghana, and a bright spot at FIFA.

He further suggested that the recent slump of the national team, the Black Stars, was as a result of Nyantakyi’s absence.

“When we were able to bring down Kwesi Nyantakyi, we also brought down Ghana football. That’s one of the brightest spots at FIFA,” the Speaker said.

“When I met the Executives of FIFA and said I was the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, they said what happened? Why did you people do that?

“He was a dynamic addition. The value that he carried at their meetings. He was highly respected, he was very influential and Ghana football was up there. We thought we were handling Nyantakyi but we didn’t know we were handling the whole of Ghana.”

In 2018, Nyantakyi was captured in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ ‘Number 12’ exposé, allegedly taking cash gifts and peddling influence.

This led to him resigning as GFA President, as well as losing his positions as FIFA Council Member and 1st Vice President of CAF.

Nyantakyi was subsequently handed a lifetime ban and fined 500,000 Swiss Francs by FIFA in the aftermath of the exposé.

He was also charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, fraud and corruption by a public officer, although he was later granted bail with some sureties.
