African oil-producing countries with the highest petrol prices – see the rankings

• Senegal has one of the highest verified petrol prices: Current data puts petrol at about $1.75 per litre, followed by Ivory Coast at $1.60 and Ghana at $1.57.

• Oil production does not guarantee cheaper fuel: Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Nigeria all record lower petrol prices despite being oil-producing countries, highlighting the impact of taxes, subsidies, exchange rates and pricing policies.

• Some figures in the original list could not be verified: The $2.20 South Sudan figure appears to come from a 2012 report, while the $1.37 Equatorial Guinea figure could not be confirmed as a current September 2026 price.

Across Africa, petrol prices are influenced by several factors, including government taxes and subsidies, exchange rates, refinery capacity, import costs and the way individual countries regulate their downstream petroleum markets.

Current data from GlobalPetrolPrices, which tracks retail pump prices using official sources where available, shows significant differences in what motorists pay for a litre of petrol across oil-producing countries.

Here are some of the countries on the list and their latest verified petrol prices.

Senegal recorded one of the highest petrol prices among the countries considered, with a litre of octane-95 gasoline selling for 990 CFA francs, equivalent to about $1.75, as of 7 September 2026.

The figure is above the global average of about $1.56 per litre recorded by GlobalPetrolPrices for the same period.

Ivory Coast ranked ahead of Ghana in the latest data, with petrol priced at 905 CFA francs, or approximately $1.60 per litre, on 7 September 2026.

The price is regulated and the data source identifies the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Energy as the source for the country's petrol-price information.

In Ghana, a litre of petrol was priced at GH¢17.97, equivalent to $1.57, as of 7 September 2026.

The figure comes from the National Petroleum Authority data used by GlobalPetrolPrices. Ghana's price was slightly above the global average at the time.

Petrol in Cameroon was selling for 840 CFA francs, or about $1.49 per litre, according to the latest available data for 7 September 2026.

The price is supplied by Cameroon's Caisse de Stabilisation des Prix des Hydrocarbures and has remained unchanged at 840 CFA francs per litre for an extended period.

The Democratic Republic of Congo recorded a petrol price of 2,650 Congolese francs, equivalent to about $1.15 per litre, on 7 September 2026.

The figure represents the retail pump price, including taxes and fees, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.

Gabon recorded a petrol price of 595 CFA francs, or approximately $1.05 per litre, on 7 September 2026.

The price is notably lower than those recorded in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Cameroon despite Gabon being an established oil producer.

Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer, had petrol selling for approximately ₦1,289.50, equivalent to $0.98 per litre, as of 7 September 2026.

The price was below the global average of $1.45 per litre cited on the country page at the time.

Oil-producing countries can still have relatively high pump prices because crude production is only one part of the final cost motorists pay.

Taxes, subsidies, currency movements, refining and distribution costs, import requirements and government price controls can all influence the price at the pump. GlobalPetrolPrices notes that countries have access to international petroleum markets but apply different taxes and subsidies, resulting in significant differences in retail prices.

The latest figures therefore show that oil production alone is not enough to determine how much motorists pay for petrol.
