The Togolese striker has opened up on the circumstances leading to his exit from Real Madrid.

Togo and Istanbul Başakşehir forward Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed that his stay with Spanish giants Real Madrid was cut short due to a damaging letter written from his family to the club’s hierarchy.

The former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs striker joined Los Blancos on-loan from Manchester City in 2011, but stayed for just six months before heading back to White Hart Lane.

Despite his short stint, Adebayor managed five goals in 14 appearances for the Merengue who were then being coached by Jose Mourinho.

The Togo international seemed to have done enough to warrant a stay in the Spanish capital, however, a permanent move failed to materialize.

However, the striker has now opened up on what led to his departure, disclosing that his own brother wrote a letter to the Madrid hierarchy asking them not to extent his contract.

“Today, I think I made the right decision to go public because of what I have been through,” Adebayor told the BBC.

“People will say yes, you have to keep it to yourself, yes. I have done everything to stay in Real Madrid but because of my late brother I couldn’t stay there because he sent a letter; an official letter from Adebayor’s family to the club that they should not keep me.

“I’m not saying that is why they didn’t keep me but it can be part of it. Even if it’s 10%, it’s a lot.”

The 33-year-old fell out with some of his family members two years ago, with his mum accusing him of failing to support her financially.

The issue dragged on for months, forcing the striker to come out publicly to give his own account, but he insists will always be grateful to his mum for her role in his life.

“My mum is saying I have never given her 200 dollars before. People that I don’t even know, I have built houses for them. I have bought cars for them so my mum can’t say certain things, my family can’t say certain things.

The Togo international currently plies his trade with Istanbul Başakşehir in the Turkish Super Lig.
