Over 2000 died through road accident in 2017

12,843 road accidents were recorded killing about 2,076 people, an increase of 2.66 percent of accidents recorded in 2016.

Out of the total number of accidents recorded 12,166 sustained critical and minor injuries.

Chief Executive Officer of the National Road Safety Commission, May Obiri Yeboah addressing the press said, 180 persons lost their lives in January 2018, an increase of 14.3% from the same period in 2017.

She said over 1,181 people also sustained injuries in various accidents since the beginning of 2018.

The regional breakdown of persons killed from highest to lowest is Eastern – 374; Ashanti – 335; Accra – 296; Brong Ahafo – 253; Central – 193; Northern – 136; Tema – 125; Western – 125; Volta – 120; Upper West – 61; and Upper East – 58.

The regional breakdown of pedestrian knockdownsare Accra – 1,196; Tema – 200; Eastern – 404; Central – 307; Western – 161; Ashanti – 652; Volta – 150; Northern – 47; Upper West – 16; Upper East – 29; and Brong Ahafo – 138.

For the regional breakdown of pedestrians killed, the figures are Accra – 238; Tema – 61; Eastern – 131; Central – 91; Western – 57; Ashanti – 129; Volta – 49; Northern – 37; Upper West – eight; Upper East – 12; and Brong Ahafo – 66.

Meanwhile, Accra topped the regional breakdown of motor vehicle accidents with 8,893; Ashanti – 3,551; Eastern – 1,724; Tema – 1,510; Central – 1,422; Volta – 823; Western – 781; Brong Ahafo – 722; Northern – 467; Upper East – 330; and Upper West – 221.

Accident records in 2013 and 2014

In 2013, the Commission recorded 14,390 road crashes involving 22,208 vehicles, killing 2,095 people and injuring 12,655 people, recording a slight decrease compared with 2012.

The first quarter of 2014 recorded 3,621accident cases, involving 5,788 vehicles, killing 147 people and injuring 3,432 people, while the same period in 2013 recorded 3,337 cases involving 5, 226 vehicles, killing 540 people and injuring 3,130.
